Alright you guys, ish is about to get REAL. Like, really real. I’ve been debating hopping on the keto bandwagon for the past six months, but truth be told, I was scared. But since it’s 2018, and I’m a better version of myself this year (you can read all about that here), I jumped in. For those of you who have no idea what in the hell keto is, in short form, it’s a diet in which you are eating whole foods, but in a balance of high(good) fat, moderate protein, and low carbs. Once your body adapts and goes into a state of “ketosis”, your body burns your own fat, rather than carbs.
I know there are some controversial articles out there regarding this diet at the moment, I’ve read them, but am creating my own opinion of it. So here’s the deal, I started exactly one week ago. Here’s the breakdown of all the questions I’ve been getting regarding it:
I’ve spent a lifetime to get to a point of accepting and loving my body as it is. This is an extension of that. I haven’t taken the best care of my body and my energy levels were starting to wain. My friends, I have places I want to go. I want the Brazen Mae movement and the Brazen life to extend worldwide. I want to be a voice in the fashion industry. Oh, and on top of all that, be a mom of three kids and stuff… and a good wife… And sometimes do laundry (I said sometiiiiimes). In order to be crush my goals, I need to be at my best. So here we are.
HOW IS IT GOING?
Surprisingly well actually. I WILL say, the first 3 days were pretty terrible. But I have to admit, I wasn’t the best planner. I had over-researched, meal planned, got hyped. What I DIDN’T take into consideration was my over-jealous self started the day after New Years. So instead of my body detoxing from a semi unbalanced diet, I was coming off of a bit (okay, a lot) of tequila, a post-dancing street-cart Seattle hotdog, and 4 am dino chicken nugget feast (don’t even judge). Needless to say, for 3 whole days I felt like death. Once I got through it, I had the biggest surge of energy I have felt in MONTHS. I’m at the point that I’m even becoming annoying to myself (this could be dangerous).
HAVE I LOST WEIGHT?
YES!! In the first week, I’m down 5 pounds and 1 inch on my waist and 1 inch on my hips. I’ll be posting before/after photos once I get to the one month mark.
WHAT AM I EATING?
For me, it’s so important to feel good. Knowing my body, I’ve limited dairy even though it’s “allowed” on some versions of keto. So I’m eating a lot of eggs, avocado, fattier cuts of meat, and a TON of veggies.
Here are my favorite meals:
breakfast: one egg, one piece of bacon, and 1/4 of an avocado
lunch: taco salad (spinach, tomato, ground beef, peppers & onion, avocado)
dinner: thai chicken curry (the coconut milk with all the veggies & chicken is the BEST winter comfort food)
HAVE I STOPPED DRINKING ALCOHOL?
Yep. You guys, this is a BIG deal. I have three kids for goodness sakes. hahaha
WHAT HAVE I LEARNED SO FAR?
First off, I’m stronger than I give myself credit for. I was scared to give up sugar, high-carb food, and alcohol. Biggest lesson ever- making the actual decision was harder than actually going through with it. I’m eating delicious food, I’m not hungry all day, my energy level is awesome. I feel great. And surprisingly, I am someone who has struggled with chronic hanger syndrome in the past, and that has even dissipated. Oh, and DUDES, MY SKIN IS LOVING IT. I’ve struggled with breakouts my whole life (I have the scars to prove it), and for the first time ever, I am not tempted to cover up my skin with foundation. THIS IS HUGE FOR ME.
I’m super happy with the journey so far and I’m excited what I’ll even feel like in a month from now. Are you thinking about going keto? Here are a few tips that has helped me get started:
– Drink a ton of water, your body needs it
– Keep it simple to start. There is SO much info on the internet about keto. Don’t overthink it. Don’t try and create a bunch of substitutes to replace bread, sugar, yada yada. Just get rid of it. Eat a burger, take the bun off. Make your own salad dressing. Limit your fruit, eat lots of veggies. S I M P L I F Y.
– Give yourself some grace. This is a learning process. You don’t need to do it perfectly right out the gate. You’ll get there.
– I found the app “My fitness Pal” to be incredibly helpful when I was ready to track my macros (how much carbs, protein, fat I was eating).
– Find a support group! There are so many great Facebook support groups out there for ideas as well as recipes. Get your family or BFF on board. I’m no expert, but I’m here for you as well!!
Cheers to being the best versions of ourselves!
